America needs to find balance in the heart of her economic base—her industry—in the commercial production and sale of goods, and find it quickly. We do not necessarily need to relearn how to develop products, build them, or market and sell them. We know how to do that; the talent and expertise are here. But the balance and the stability are missing in Corporate America today. We have no parity between workers, managers, and  upper management—only class divides that threatens the very structure of American business.

This book, “The Approach” is my invention, an imaginative creation intended to provide insight into what I believe can heal the wounds of American industry. The story is fictional. There is no U.S.-based golf goods manufacturing company called USGOLFCO. There is no retail mega-superstore called Mar*Ton. Frederick Boldman is not a real person. But though I created these fictional characters, I have intentionally represented as true all the contents of “The Approach.”

Having said that, we all have worked for a company like USGOLFCO. We all shop at Mar*Ton and we all question whether or not someone could conceivably be worth a salary of 20 million dollars no matter what he or she could do in a period of 12 months. We all know someone who has been fired even though he was a good person doing good work, the company was making money from him and outperforming its competitors.

What have we done when that  happened? After some time passed and we became busy doing other things we forgot about it. Over time we shrugged it off, saying, “That is just Corporate America.”

But that’s not all we’ve done. In reality we have lowered our standards, lowered our expectations for those who lead us while we work in these corporate organizations. We’ve told them it’s okay to demoralize and be unfair to us. Tacit approval has paved the way for even bolder worker abuse.

This book is about raising those expectations again back to higher ground, back to something we can trust and believe in without question. When we buy a ticket to a ball game we expect to be entertained by the ball playing we witness. Why shouldn’t we expect to be inspired by the leadership of the company we work for?

I do want to entertain you as you read this book. But I also want to inspire you to do a little upward coaching and give those who lead you some feedback. If they say they value people then make sure their actions support that claim. What does that mean anyway? How can firing people for no apparent reason, then hiring new people to do those same jobs, be considered valuing the human beings? How can management even debate that option when a company is making millions of dollars and outperforming its competitors?

This book is not a textbook on leadership. It is a thought-provoking discussion book for all Americans. We are all directly impacted by what happens in our nation’s corporate boardrooms. We need to redefine ourselves and those people who lead us each and every day at work, for we can only become what our thoughts lead us to believe. Don’t want to think about it? You must, because the very essence of our American way of life is being threatened. And it is being threatened from within.

Each and every American needs to step forward and contribute to the discussion so that our industry remains vibrant and we are able to continue to live life the American way throughout the 21st Century. Are you willing and able? I know you are.
Go for it!
